Neighborhood seniors stroll streets to maintain good health

Ruth Glass knows that walking is good for the heart. She also knows it can be more enjoyable in the company of others.

That’s why for the last few years, Ruth, a 15-year resident of the neighborhood and current chairperson of the BNA’s seniors committee, has organized a walking group of neighborhood elders. The group, which has been as small as two and as large as a dozen, usually walks for about an hour and covers a distance of about a mile. They take different routes and usually include a stop along the way at a park, landmark or neighborhood retailer.

"Exercise, especially at an older age, is really good," says Ruth. "We seniors have a tendency to slow down, and sometimes we slow down too much. Like my doctor told me, there’s no excuse not to walk unless there’s snow or ice on the ground."

Ruth is always looking for more seniors to join the walking group. The current crew tries to walk on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, but the times are flexible enough to accomodate the schedules of newcomers.
